These paintings translate the fixed light of old photographs into unstable images. They shift in appearance depending on the light in which they are viewed: a positive when lit from above becomes a negative when lit from the side; when lit from in front the image dissolves into formlessness. In this way they reveal—if only for fleeting moments—unexpected latencies within the subjects, promoting fresh connections and new histories between them.

The images are drawn from a wide range of sources. A few are personal, most are not. While the choices are not arbitrary, the ideas that inform the works—and the links between them—are not clearly defined. Rather, they offer an invitation to see connections and to narrate stories, stories that evolve from exhibition to exhibition. Certain themes of technology, presence, occluded vision, and representation do however thread through all the works, entangling them also with the related series of borders, clouds and hands.
